From St Bees on the Irish Sea we pass through Wordsworth's Lakes, Herriot's Dales and Heartbeat's Moors as we follow Alfred Wainwright's legendary walk to reach our goal at Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea.
Leaving the west coast we ramble through the CumbrianLake District, the Pennine Uplands, glorious Swaledale, the Vale of Mowbray, the Cleveland Hills, Eskdale and the North York Moors. We pass through historical market towns and some of the most picturesque and attractive stone villages prior to our arrival on the east coast.
England's north country is renowned for its wild and beautiful countryside which presents more varied scenery than most whole countries. Indeed the Yorkshire Dales have been dubbed England's last wilderness. The 190 mile (300km) classic walk covers three national parks, the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors. We take 20 days to complete this great walk with a day off at Wordsworth's Grasmere, beloved by artists and poets, and at historical Richmond famous for the song “Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill”.
The Coast to Coast Tour is covered in two sections, (1) The Lakes, and (2) The Dales & Moors.
Thus walkers have the option of completing the walk in one go, or for convenience separating the two sections. Others may prefer to walk only The Lakes Section (1), with the option of completing the total Coast to Coast at sometime in the future, or alternatively choose the rolling dales and heather moors of Section (2). We walk an easy average of 10 miles (16km) per day door to door, and do not waste time in buses travelling to the start and from the finish of our day's walk.
